The history of osun osogbo festival part 1

History of the Osun Oshogbo festival
The town of Osogbo is believed to have been founded around
400 years ago. It is part of the wider Yoruba community,
divided into 16 kingdoms, which legend says were ruled by the
children of Oduduwa, the mythic founder, whose abode at Ile-
Ife, south-east of Osogbo, is still regarded as the spiritual
home of the Yoruba people.
The earliest settlement seems to have been in the Osogbo
Grove and included palaces and a market. When the population
expanded the community moved outside the Grove and created
a new town, which reflected spatially the arrangements within
the Grove.
In the 1840s Osogbo became a refugee town for people fleeing
the Fulani Jihad, as it moved south from what is now northern
Nigeria. The Yorubas retreated further south into the forests
and Osogbo, right at the northern edge of the forest, became
an important centre for northern Yorubaland.
The Fulani attacks on Osogbo were repelled and, as a result,
Osogbo has become a symbol of pride for all the Yorubas.
During the first half of the 20th century, the town of Osogbo
expanded considerably. In 1914 British colonial rule begun. As
it was delivered under a system of indirect rule through
traditional rulers, the authority of the Oba and priests were
sustained. A greater change was brought about from the
middle of the 19th century through the introduction of both
Islam and Christianity. Islam became the religion of traders
and ruling houses - as it gave contacts to northern trade
routes and links to returning enslaves from Central and South
America. For a while all three religions co-existed but as time
went by it became less fashionable to be identified with the
Ogboni and Osun cults.
By the 1950s the combined political and religious changes
were having a marked detrimental effect on the Grove:
customary responsibilities and sanctions were weakening,
shrines were becoming neglected and traditional priests began
to disappear. All this was exacerbated by a rise in the looting
of statues and movable sculptures to feed an antiquities
market. At around this time part of the Grove was acquired by
the Department of Agriculture and Forestry for agricultural
experiments. Trees were felled and teak plantations
established; sculptures were reportedly stolen and hunting and
fishing begun to be recorded - previously forbidden in the
sacred Grove.
It was at this crucial point in the history of the Grove that
Austrian born Suzanne Wenger moved to Osogbo and, with the
encouragement of the Oba and the support from local people,
formed the New Sacred Art movement to challenge land
speculators, repel poachers, protect shrines and begin the long
process of bringing the sacred place back to life through once
again establishing it as the sacred heart of Osogbo.
The artists deliberately created large, heavy and fixed
sculptures in iron cement and mud, as opposed to the smaller
traditional wooden ones, in order that their intimidatory
architectural forms would help to protect the Grove and stop
thefts. All the sculptures have been done in full respect for the
spirit of the place, with inspiration from Yoruba mythology and
in consultations with the gods in a traditional context.
The new work has made the Grove a symbol of identity for the
Yoruba people. Many from the African Diaspora now undertake
a pilgrimage to the annual festival.
In 1965 part of the Grove was declared a national monument.
This was extended in 1992 so that now the whole 75 hectares
are protected.

Open letter from a passionate fan to olamide

Hi Olamide,

I am a fan of yours and I have followed your growth from the
days with ID Cabasa and the Coded Tunes crew, to your days
under Toni Payne‘s management. Parting ways with her was
quite risky but I felt it was a move worth making as you
needed a fully dedicated management to grow your career.
That move paid off and you’re now better off for it.
Pitching your tent with 1805 Entertainment, your immense
talent and the void left by Dagrin‘s demise meant only one
thing – A top spot for you! I am glad you fit in perfectly. A
bolder move to start YBNL Nation and you going ahead to drop
your second album on the YBNL Nation/1805 Entertainment
imprint was another risky move that still paid off. At that point,
I knew the ‘god of music’ was behind you.
Though it wasn’t so surprising to see the street embrace the
album cos of it quality street wise content, the rate at which the
‘butties’ accepted you too was alarming. People preached the
YBNL gospel and gladly talked about how good the album
was. Even my cool friend Fola Alade became an advocate of
‘Razz being the new Cool’, no thanks to you. But while we
where enjoying Jale, Street Love, Jesu O kola, silly Love, First
of All, Ilefo Illuminati amongst other beautiful songs, dear
Olamide, you unconsciously killed the album!
Yes, you unfortunately killed it by releasing too many materials
not so long after the album dropped and you shifted our
attention off the album. To make matters worse, some of these
songs were not half as good as the songs on the album and
they also were not well promoted, Confession, Tonto Dike,
Baddest Nigga That ever liveth, e.t.c. Needless to say that some
were also really good, cos some of us still have Turn Up and
Durosoke topping our playlists.
Baddo, have you heard of the point of equilibrium? That’s the
point when the law of diminishing return sets in. It happens to
everything and everyone. In simple terms, it’s the point where
you get to the peak, have nothing extra to offer and the drop
starts. To some, the drop might not be deep while to some,
they would never rise to that point again. Unfortunately, this
happens a lot in the music industry. While we agree that you
are HOT at this moment and the inspiration is much, brother,
please do not wear yourself out. Ma le ara e ni ere.
Truth is when you saturate the market with too many
materials, we get tired easily, we don’t pay full attention to
them and the songs end up not getting as much love as they
should. Keep recording, keep saving them in the cloud and
don’t push too many songs within a short period. Let the fans
yearn for more, let us savour the goodness of some of what
you already have.
On a final note, I love the way your personality is gradually
evolving ‘cos building a brand of yourself should be beyond
your music. I foresee a near future where corporate brands
that want to connect with the streets would come to you,
simply because you are the link between the streets and the
corporate world. A celebrated grass to grace story. The true
voice of the streets.

Boki haram commander shekau killed at last?

There is tension in the security circles over the reported killing
of the leader of the Boko Haram Islamic sect, Abubakar
Shekau, by operatives of the Joint Task Force in Borno State.
The spokesman of the JTF, Col. Sagir Musa, said in a
statement on Monday that the Boko Haram leader died of
gunshot wounds he sustained during the invasion of the
Sambisa Forest.
Curiously, the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen Chris
Olukolade, referred our correspondent to the headquarters of
the JTF in Borno State, when he was contacted for further
confirmation.
Ordinarily, the killing of the most wanted terror leader, who
has a $7m bounty on his head, would have been celebrated by
all security agencies but the situation appears to be different
in the absence of evidence of his death.
But Col. Musa insisted that intelligence reports at the disposal
of the JTF showed that: “Abubakar Shekau, the most dreaded
and wanted Boko Haram terrorist, may have died.”
The JTF spokesman said the Boko Haram leader was seriously
wounded in the attack at Sambisa on June 30, 2013, by the
special forces and was taken to a border community in the
nation’s border with Cameroun, identified as Amitchide, for
treatment.
He said Shekau did not recover from the gunshot wounds he
sustained at the Sambisa Forest.
The statement said, “Shekau was mortally wounded in the
encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide – a border
community in Cameroun for treatment, from which he never
recovered. It is greatly believed that Shekau might have died
between July 25 and August 3, 2013."
Col. Musa added that a video released purportedly by the Boko
Haram leader on August 13, 2013, was a deceit by a member
of the sect to convince members to continue with the
insurgency. He urged members of the sect to lay down their
arms and accept the Federal Government’s offer of dialogue.
Musa added that the video was “dramatised by an imposter to
hoodwink the sect members to continue with terrorism and to
deceive undiscerning minds”.
Is Shekau truly dead? Can we believe the JTF this time?

Big girl pours hot oil on boyfriend for refusing to marry her

This is a warning to all those guys who are dating one girl for
several years. If your plan is to later dump her for a fresh sexy
babe, then be prepared oh!
A Lagos big girl, Victoria Alonge, traveled all the way to Abuja
to attack her estranged lover, Roland Nna for refusing to marry
her after "using" her for 4years.
“ I did that to teach him a bitter lesson because he
refused to marry me after dating me for over four
years. He fooled me and my parents and ditched me
after finding a new lover here in Abuja. I live in Lagos
with my parents,” Victoria said.
A Karu Senior Magistrates’ court, on Monday sentenced 25-
year-old Victoria Alonge, to one-year in jail for pouring hot oil
on her ex-boyfriend, Roland, over his refusal to marry her.
The Senior Magistrate, Omolola Akindele, summarily
sentenced Alonge without an option of fine after the convict
admitted to committing the offence in court.
Alonge was arraigned by the police on a one-count charge of
causing grievous hurt on Nna, her ex-boyfriend who lives in
the Kurudu area of Abuja.
Victoria had gone to Roland's house at about 4:30 a.m. on the
fateful day and poured hot oil on him while he was asleep,
resulting in grievous hurt on his body. She was immediately
arrested by the police and confessed to committing the crime.
While in detention, OluFamous.Com gathered that Victoria
threatened to inflict more harm on Roland when and if she
meet him again. She said it is unacceptable for him to just use
and dump her like that.

The love tempo in the Big Brother Africa house is bound to
change drastically, we observed, as Beverly
Osu's in-house lover, Angelo, has been evicted from the reality
show.
Angelo's eviction happened on Sunday and Beverly cried out
her eyes. While she was sobbing, Melvin who is Naija's second
representatives but always quiet in the BBA house, went to
Beverly Osu's bed to console her and gave her a sweet
message. Below is what he told her:
"You still have me. You will be fine. I will still be here for
you. My bed is the biggest in the House. You can share it
with me."
Since Angelo will be going back to South Africa to be with his
real girlfriend, do not be surprise if tomorrow you see Beverly
in the hands of this cute guy, Melvin. It seems she really need
a man. *laughs*

ANGELO AND BIMP EVICTED FROM BIG BROTHER AFRICA

South African representative Angelo and Ethiopia’s Bimp
were evicted from the BBA house this evening.Dance teacher
Angelo Collins entered Big Brother because he realised that
life is too short and “one shouldn’t limit the things you want
to do”. If he wins the grand prize, he will start a small
business, help an orphanage and help his mom and family
with a better life.
Angelo describes himself as “tall, dark, adventurous and
handsome” and attributes his confidence to being relaxed
and comfortable in his own skin. He dislikes arrogant, self-
centred and rude people, preferring people who are confident
and know what they want in life. Viewers can expect “a lot of
craziness” from him, believing he has a funny personality
and will make people laugh.
Ethiopia’s Bimp has become the 21st Housemate to be
Evicted from The Chase. After what has been a confusing
night that saw all three of the Eviction Nominees being called
into the Rendezvous Room, Live Show presenter IK revealed
to the Housemates and to Africa that Bimp’s Chase has come
to an end.
As soon as Bimp sat down, IK wasted no time in probing the
Ethiopian about his beef withElikem. The ousted Housemate
shared that he does not see eye to eye with the Ghanaian
because Elikem has grown increasingly cocky in the House.
“He has changed,” Bimp insisted.
